Essay

In Animal Farm by George Orwell, there were some very memorable moments and is a powerful piece of writing. Some of the memorable moments are when animals show acts of rebellion. The animals rebelled against Mr. Jones and then each other and this is memorable because this is an unusual way for animals to stand up for themselves when they don’t like the situation they are in.

The book wouldn’t be as interesting if there weren’t the rebellious acts of the animals. In the beginning, the animals were having a normal time at manor farm. However they start to notice that Mr. Jones is drinking a lot and not getting the job’s done around the farm. On one occasion when Mr. Jones gets drunk he forgets to feed the animals and they think he is neglecting them so they decide to get rid of him.

Old Major, who is a pig, calls a meeting for all the animals to discuss what they should do. The animals make a plan and decide to kick Mr. Jones out of the farm. This is memorable because the animals are acting like humans would if they had a problem that they needed to solve. The first act of rebellion is when they took the sign down and flipped it over and wrote Animal Farm instead of Manor farm on it, but they spelled it in their our unique way with some letters the wrong way round to represent that they are not humans. This was memorable because it was fascinating that the animals wanted to learn the English language. They have a strong reason to learn English because they want to run the farm themselves without humans.

Another memorable moment was when the hens laid their eggs high up in the rafters so they didn’t have to give them up to Napoleon who wanted to sell them for money. Napoleon had told the hens that they needed to lay more eggs so he could get more money for farm supplies. The hens didn’t like this idea because they wanted to keep their babies. Once again the actions are more like human behaviour and not something we expect from animals. George Orwell made this memorable by using sentences “they protested that to take the eggs away now was murder”. this creates an image in your head of what’s going on and he makes you feel like you are there.

The story is so memorable because the acts of rebellion that the animals did were so unexpected because animals aren’t usually smart enough to do such things, we are used to humans acting like this but not farm animals. That’s why the story was quite scary because it makes you think about treating everyone equally because they deserve to be equal.
